The Greatest Story Ever Told About
The Greatest Man That Ever Lived
                                                                  CHAPTER 12

A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a
crown of twelve stars on her head.  She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give
birth.  Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns
and seven crowns on its heads.  Its tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the
earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her
child the moment he was born.  She gave birth to a son, a male child, who “will rule all the nations with
an iron scepter.  And her child was snatched up to God and to his throne.  The woman fled into the
wilderness to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days.

All these signs and events happened in heaven and not on the earth.  There is a sign that appeared in
heaven yet part way through it’s as though she was a woman who could cry out and give birth.  I am
not sure what it means and I would have to guess at a lot of it.  It does speak of Jesus’ birth and the
devil but is the woman his mother or is it Israel?  It’s just a sign and is only additional information, it’s
not affecting anyone in a direct way, so it does not interfere with the rest of the judgments or what is
happening on earth during the Tribulation.  It may be an overview or summary of what happened as it
relates to the next passages.  Again we do have the same timeline of 3 ½ years.

The reference to the dragon having seven heads and ten horns is similar to the beast of Chapter 13.
His sweeping a third of the stars out of the sky could refer to the angels that rebelled with him as the
word stars is also used for angels as in Rev 1:20.

And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his
angels fought back.  But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven.  The great
dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world
astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.   Then I heard a loud voice in heaven
say: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his
Messiah.  For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night,
has been hurled down.  They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their
testimony;  they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.  Therefore rejoice, you
heavens and you who dwell in them!  But woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone
down to you!  He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short.”

When I first read “and there was war in heaven” I couldn’t believe that this could be.  I always thought
heaven was a beautiful and peaceful place where only good existed.  But that is not the case, not yet,
and that’s because the devil still has access to both heaven and earth.  But now, since Jesus was
given authority in heaven and earth as we saw in Chapter 11, the devil has no more place in heaven.
And he put up a fight when he was asked to leave.  He was thrown down to the earth and his angels
with him and he was no longer allowed access to heaven.  God was going to clean house, both in
heaven and on earth and destroy his enemies and establish peace.  Those who live on the earth are
now going to experience the full wrath of the devil because he knows that he doesn’t have much time
left.  Meanwhile, in heaven, there is now much rejoicing as that old troublemaker, the devil is finally
cast out.  The devil's angels were also cast down with him, but there is no further reference to them in
the rest of the Book of Revelation.   We are not told what they will do on earth or of their eternal
future.  We can only assume that they will serve satan and experience the same fate as him because
Jesus said
"..the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels".

Something to remember here is that the devil is also called the dragon which we will refer to in
Chapter 13 as we see what the devil is going to do now that he is cast down to earth
.  Also because
this happens in heaven, we will not even know about it.  And then the question is:  Will we see the
devil and his angels here on earth since they have no where else to go?

When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth
to the male child.  The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle, so that she might fly to the
place prepared for her in the wilderness, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a
time, out of the serpent’s reach.  Then from his mouth the serpent spewed water like a river, to overtake
the woman and sweep her away with the torrent.  But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth
and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth.  Then the dragon was enraged at
the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring—those who keep God’s
commands and hold fast their testimony about Jesus.

This is a continuation of the beginning of the chapter and the same applies to it as my above
comments.  Something to note here is that the devil is now going to go after Christians in a big way
which we will see in Chapter 13.
