The Greatest Story Ever Told About
The Greatest Man That Ever Lived
                                                                 CHAPTER 8

When he opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.  And I saw the
seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.  Another angel, who had
a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of
all God’s people, on the golden altar in front of the throne.  The smoke of the incense, together with the
prayers of God’s people, went up before God from the angel’s hand.  Then the angel took the censer,
filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings,
flashes of lightning and an earthquake.

This opening of the 7th seal is a mystery.  We are told that there will be silence in heaven for about
half an hour, but we are not told why.  Which is okay, we can just accept it as that and we will see
what happens during that time while we are there.  If I were to guess, I would say this.  If a large
group of people from all over the world were invited to a conference, would it not be normal for the
one who called the conference to stand up and give a welcome speech to his guests?  We also see
here that after the 7th seal there is another earthquake.   This is soon after the earthquake of the 6th
seal.

Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to sound them.  The first angel sounded
his trumpet, and there came hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth. A
third of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was
burned up.

The mixture of hail and fire mixed with blood is rather unusual and it’s unclear as to what this could
be.  If a third of the earth is burned up it must be the fire that does that but what was it’s source? It
could be a meteor shower but we are not told specifically, so we will have to wait and see.
Remember, if you are a born again Christian who loves Jesus with all your heart and if you live for
him, you won’t be here for this event anyway.  Another thing that is not clear is whether the 1/3 will
be in one area or all over the earth totalling about 1/3 of the area of the earth.  In any case it will be
devastating.

The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown
into the sea. A third of the sea turned into blood, a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a
third of the ships were destroyed.

This one is easier to understand because John said that “something like a huge mountain, all ablaze
was thrown into the sea”.  This was not a mountain, it just looked like it.  So what would most
resemble a flaming mountain?   A comet.  A meteorite.  An asteroid.  Even though these are usually a
lot smaller than a mountain, these are not normal times and if John said he saw a mountain then this
object must be huge.  It killed 1/3 of the sea life which caused a third of the sea to turn to blood.
When John said that “a third of the ships were destroyed” we have to think outside the box on this.
A blazing mountain could not destroy 1/3 of the ships on this earth.  At best it could destroy only the
few that it hit, but a tsunami which resulted from the impact could destroy many ships.

The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third
of the rivers and on the springs of water the name of the star is Wormwood.  A third of the waters
turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.

The next object that hits the earth is a great star, blazing like a torch.  It falls on the earth and poisons
1/3 of the rivers.

The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a
third of the stars, so that a third of them turned dark. A third of the day was without light, and also a
third of the night.

A reasonable explanation of this would be the result of the large star hitting the earth.  It would throw
up so much dust into the air that the sun and moon would not be as bright for awhile.  If that is not
what causes this it really doesn’t matter because that will not change the fact that they won’t be as
bright.

As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair call out in a loud voice: “Woe! Woe! Woe to the
inhabitants of the earth, because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!”

This sounds like the eagle that is flying in midair is flying over the earth but it is not totally clear.  He
may also be flying through the heavens because he refers to the people as inhabitants of the earth
and does not speak to them directly.   That he can speak is in itself a mystery.

Something to consider here is this.  These judgments do not happen one right after the other.   The
Tribulation period lasts 7 years and there are 21 judgments and other events that happen in between
them.   The first 7 seals open before the start of the Tribulation.   This leaves 14 judgments over 84
months.  While reading this it sounds like they happen one right after the other, but they don’t.   The
reason some people may not consider these to be Judgments from God is because so far they are all
natural disasters.   These are just warnings from God but the rest of the judgments get more and
more severe.
